Carpet padding is usually available in three basic types: foam, rubber and fiber. The type of padding used depends on the type and pattern of the carpet and the amount of traffic the room will receive. Also important to keep in mind is the fact that certain types of carpet require a specific thickness and type of padding. Deviating from this recommendation can void your warranty.

Areas such as bedrooms which receive less traffic tend to use a thicker, softer padding. High traffic areas of the home require a thinner pad, with more cushion. These areas are typically living rooms, family rooms and stairs.

By reducing pile height loss and pile crushing, carpet padding can help keep a carpet looking new longer.
