In today’s marketplace there are many solid
or engineered wood flooring options available. For the average consumer
deciding which product is best for your home can be a confusing process.
Our knowledgeable sales staff will ask you a few questions about the existing
flooring in your home and your family’s lifestyle to better guide
you toward the floor of your dreams.
Solid wood (tongue and groove plank) flooring
is usually ¾” thick and is
installed by stapling or nailing the product to a wood sub-floor. Floors
that are pre-finished by the factory offer a wide variety of natural or
stained décor options. Solid wood flooring can be installed above
grade, and on wood sub-flooring only.
Engineered wood flooring is a composite product
consisting of multiple layers of wood bonded together with a top layer
consisting of the wood species selected. Engineered products are usually
installed by gluing or floating the floor. These floors range in thickness,
but are thinner than the ¾” solid wood products. Engineered
wood flooring can be installed where solid hardwood can not, such as below
grade and on concrete sub-floors. It can also be installed on wood sub-flooring
or anywhere that that thickness of the product is prohibitive.
As always, a moisture test should be conducted prior to any wood installation.
This is a simple test conducted by our salesperson utilizing a hand held
meter, that when applied directly to your sub-floor gives a moisture reading.
