How to Measure A Room If you want to get an approximate idea of the cost of covering a floor in your home, you can measure yourself. Because all carpeting, ceramic tile, and vinyl floors are sold by the square foot, the size of the room has a direct bearing on the purchase price of raw materials and installation. When measuring your own room remember to include where the carpet meets other surfaces, especially into hall areas and under the door jambs. Also include closets, and keep in mind all of the carpet being installed must be run in the same direction to avoid unacceptable shading.
